Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

England's Dreaming is the ultimate book on punk, its progenitors, the Sex Pistols, and the moment they defined for music fans in England and the United States. Savage brings to life the sensational story of the meteoric rise and rapid implosion of the Pistols through layers of rich detail, exclusive interviews, and rare photographs. This fully revised and updated edition of the book covers the legacy of punk twenty-five years later and provides an account of the Pistols' 1996 reunion as well as a freshly updated discography and a completely new introduction.

Brian Jennings, June 29, 2009 (view all comments by Brian Jennings)
The Sex Pistols changed my life, though I was listening to proto-punk without knowing it. Being of a certain age I missed the 60's and as a teenager was somewhat jealous. Well, punk changed that for me. Punk was it's own radical moment, and I've read three books that reflected that moment. This is one of them. Savage was there also, on the British side. This is a document from someone who not only lived it, but has thought about it and thought about it deeply. It is a history, but more than that as it reflects the moments that created and were created. It seems odd to me now that no one even seems to remember Thatcherism and Reaganism, how something that had seemed to leave with Nixon came roaring back, at a time not that much different from now, where unemployment was ridiculously high, where we were living with the failures of the 60s.

Punk was essential, probably more than I can convince in this short notice, but maybe this book can. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
