Dances with Books, June 7, 2011 (view all comments by Dances with Books)
My children and I love reading Jan Brett's illustrated version of Lear's famous poem over and over...and over. This is the perfect book to read in the dark days of winter. The surprising sweetness of this wee love story is delightfully depicted in tropical color and carribbean creativity with Brett's attention to detail and ability to paint texture and expression. The pictures splash in our eyes in a rainbow of color, and we can feel the warm sea and hear the melodic plash of water and waves as the drawings and the story carry us away to a tropical fairyland of love and fun. We recommend this book to children and parents alike, and hope to have a beautiful sea green boat for our own sailing away someday!
