About the Author

Phillip Laplante received his B.S., M.Eng., and Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, and computer science, respectively, from Stevens Institute of Technology, and an MBA from the University of Colorado. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of numerous other professional societies, program committees, and boards. He has served extensively as volunteer board member for a number of social and civic organizations. Dr. Laplante is President of the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology. Prior to this he was the founding dean of the BCC/NJIT Technology and Engineering Center in Southern New Jersey. He was also Associate Professor of Computer Science and Chair of the Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics Departments at Fairleigh Dickenson University.

Seppo J. Ovaska received his D.Sc. (Tech.) from Tampere University of Technology, Finland, in 1989. He is currently a Professor in the Faculty of Electronics, Communications, and Automation at Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. Before joining Helsinki University of Technology in 1996, he was a Professor in the Department of Information Technology at Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland (1992-1996). From 1980 to 1992, he held engineering, research, and R&D management positions with Kone Elevators and Nokia Research Center, both in Finland and in the United States.
