Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Here is the third volume in George R. R. Martin's magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martin's stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey, of House Lannister, sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the land of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, the victim of the jealous sorceress who holds him in her evil thrall. But young Robb, of House Stark, still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Robb plots against his despised Lannister enemies, even as they hold his sister hostage at King's Landing, the seat of the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world....

But as opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others — a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords...

Synopsis:

The third book in the Song of Ice and Fire series makes its debut in trade format and heralds the arrival of new trade paperback editions of Martin's prior books, A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. Martin is virtually unmatched in the complexity of his world building and the richness of his characterizations.

Synopsis:

The sequel to the bestselling A Clash of Kings continues the story of the Seven Kingdoms. House Lannister has tightened its grip on the Iron Throne, but Tyrion still chafes under the rule of his scheming sister, his brutal father, and his sadistic nephew. While a continent away, Danaerys Stormborn and her dragons grow in power, while each undertakes a single-minded quest for victory and envelops the world in a storm of swords.

Love the devious, sinful twisted turn of events.
One day they're dead, the next you no longer know what to believe.
One of those books that will get you hooked up, and will leave your bookish hunger sated and famished at the same time. :)

This was by far my favorite book in the series. The plot was great and I couldn't wait to find out what Arya and all the other characters would do next. I love how these books are written, all the different characters with their own chapters and points of view. Although the first two books were amazing and the last ones good, this book was something special.

I nearly lost interest during the meandering, character-heavy second book, but in book three Martin narrows both the focus and the list of characters. There are many, many surprises in this one some of which you will not see coming. Some of them you were hoping for, and some of them will blindside you. A lot of surviving characters get new verve and purpose. If you thought you couldn't make it through the lengthy series, this one gives you the momentum to make you keep going.
