Publisher Comments:

Book News Annotation:

Graphic designers and those interested in the graphic arts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries will welcome the facsimile reprinting of this handsome volume (first published in 1971) on the history of the poster. Chapters written in German, French, and English discuss what Josef Mller-Brockman, himself a graphic artist and poster designer, felt were the four types of poster designs: illustrative, informative, constructive, and experimental. The book features many full-page color plates of a large variety of posters--produced in Europe (mostly), North America, Japan, and elsewhere--which admirably represent a graphic art more commonly seen in prints.
