Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In Israel's Higher Law, Steven V. Mazie sheds new light on the relationship between liberalism and religion through a detailed assessment of the Jewish state. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Israeli citizens, this compelling work scrutinizes the ways in which Israelis conceptualize and debate their polity's religion-state arrangement.

Book News Annotation:

Mazie (politics, Bard High School Early College, Manhattan) argues that while connections between religion and state are often antithetical to liberal aims, they are not necessarily so. A Jewish and democratic state is possible, he claims, but the challenge is to sort out which elements of establishment are compatible with liberal democracy and which are not. Much of his material comes from interviews with Jewish and Arabic Israelis. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

This well-written book is full of surprises, especially from the ultra-Orthodox and Arab interview subjects. I thought I knew a lot about Israeli politics until I read this book! After reading it, I'm thinking a lot about what all this means for other countries as well, and whether religion and democracy could cohere in Muslim countries. Highly recommended.

This is a fascinating look at the "Jewish and democratic state" of Israel through the eyes of 31 Israelis. Mazie manages to maintain excellent balance in this book -- a rare achievement for a topic that is all too prone to ideological extremism. I loved the anecdotes & stories told by his interview subjects and found the book truly enlightening.
