Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This is a thoroughly revised edition of the successful 1995 product. The 448 kanji in this set are those prescribed by the Japanese Ministry of Education for the first three grades of school. Tuttle Flash Cards is a comprehensive series of flash cards designed to help travelers and beginning learners of Asian languages. The series will include Kanji Cards Vol II, Kana Cards, Japanese in a Flash I and II vocabulary-building cards, as well as parallel sets of flash cards for Arabic, Chinese, Filipino, Indonesian, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese.

Contains 448 boxed cards - each card displays on its front the character together with its number of strokes and sequential number within the Ministry of Education system. Other information includes the radical and remaining components, and references to the numbers under which the character is listed in the definitive Tuttle reference works Kanji and Kana by Wolfgang Hadamitzky and Mark Spahn and the Modern Reader's Japanese-English Character Dictionary by Andrew N. Nelson.

* On the back are shown both on (Chinese-origin) and kun (native Japanese) readings, distinguished by being in upper and lower case respectively, along with a demonstration of the stroke order employed in writing the character.

* For a second stage of learning, up to four compounds are also listed on the front of the card, with their readings and English translations on the back.

* An accompanying booklet explains how to use the cards and lists all the characters covered according to their stroke order, and alphabetically by readings. A section for further study lists kanji that share a common radical and reading with those include in the set, enabling users to learn more advanced kanji.
