Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

After a century of wars, internal division, political upheaval, mass emigration, and high unemployment, a more prosperous, diverse, and tolerant Irish society has emerged. Ivana Bacik examines the shape and nature of the new Ireland, where Catholic religious traditions sit uneasily alongside a culture that is growing more secular and liberal in outlook. This book is distributed for O'Brien Press, Dublin and is for sale only in the United States, it's territories and dependencies, Canada, and the Philippines.

Book News Annotation:

Bacik (law, Trinity College, Dublin) maintains that Ireland has changed greatly from a benighted and impoverished little island in the 1950s to a progressive and diverse society flush with economic success. She maintains that recent liberalization is at least partially responsible, citing changes in laws concerning families, gender equality, abortion and contraception, sexuality and sexual offenses, free expression, the environment, ethnicity and immigration, and that although much has been done to reduce the influence of the Catholic Church on decisions of state and to get Ireland in line with the rest of the world, much still needs to be done. Distributed by the U. of Wisconsin Press.
