Fiction. This prequel to ECOTOPIA is a multi-stranded novel that dramatizes the rise and triumph of a powerful American movement to preserve the earth as a safe, habitable environment. Its heroine is a brash and brilliant high school student who invents a better photovoltaic cell. People who also appear in ECOTOPIA first join the story in this epic vision of the birth of a new nation.

This has been a life changing book for me and remains so even though I first read it
nearly a quarter century ago. The book details the actions and ultimate results from
'a small group of thoughtful committed citizens...' (thank you Margaret Mead ) who set out
to change their world and succeed. Many of the selfish deeds of ruthless corporate entites
read like stories in today's newspaper--even years later. Before Quinn's Ishmael and
concepts from Permaculture to Biodynamic Farming to 'Off the grid living,' and James Howard
Kunstler's World Made By Hand (and The Long Emergency amongst his other writings), Callenbach
seems to have seen the crisis coming. True, the dimensions and specifics of the crises
we are now confronting are somewhat different than those described in Ecotopia Emerging.
The ten points of what was (alas, given current usage!) christened 'The Survivalist Party,'
the 'No More,s' are just as valid as means of enhancing all life, humans included, as they
were in 1981, perhaps even more so. If you read this book, you will find yourself asking
some serious questions and the answers you discover to your questions may well change your
life dramatically and forever.
