Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This important new introductory book emphasises the link between biology and health by taking the Activities of Daily Living model as an organising framework. Covering the material that foundation students need to continue their studies, Biology and Health assumes little or no previous knowledge . Fundamental concepts and knowledge are introduced in an approachable manner, and explained so that they can be applied to practice.

About the Author

S H CEDAR is a Senior Lecturer in Biological/Biomedical Sciences, London South Bank University. She lectures in Cell and Molecular Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Genetics and Neurobiology.

She has taught nurses and health students for some ten years. Her recent work has been in Genethics, linking the new genetic technologies to their practical uses and the implications for these uses. In this area she is interested in the freedom/censure of scientific research and the exploitation and misunderstanding of scientific results. She curated an exhibition called 'Ego', which brought together eminent scientists and artists to look at the common ground in their ideas, which culminate in their practice and the exploitation of their ideas.

She is interested in the public understanding of science and recently gave a lecture on genetics and neuroscience as part of British Science Week at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in association with a new play Descent. She has various publications in Genetics and Ethics and the need for genetics in nurse education as well as in public understanding of science.
