About the Author

MAREK HLASKO was born in Warsaw in 1934. His novels, which were explicitly critical of the Communist regime, were attacked in the Polish press and banned. Hlasko subsequently left Poland, living briefly in Germany, France, Italy, and Israel. In 1969, Roman Polanski brought him to Hollywood to work as a screenwriter; while there, he got into a fight with a friend who died from his injuries a few days afterwards. Hlasko never forgave himself and he committed suicide later that year, at the age of 35. He was the author of 10 novels, a number of collections of essays and

short stories, and a memoir.

NORBERT GUTERMAN was a scholar and translator from Latin, French, and Polish, and he translated a number of Marek Hlasko's novels.
