Great sock book for all levels of experience. Small and compact so great for a carry around town project. Written directions and charts.

This book is full of excellent sock knitting patterns. These include both charts and written directions and are very clear to follow. Each pattern is listed with the finished circumference and length of the sock (with X number of repeats) if knit at the suggested gauge, which is EXTREMELY helpful if you want the finished product to fit the intended recipient.

The patterns range from simple to detailed, and involve ribbing, cabling, lace, and stranded knitting (multiple colors). I recommend it to any sock knitter, from someone beginning to knit socks to advanced knitters who'd like some well-written patterns. I find the patterns complicated enough to engage me but simple enough to memorize. I've made two patterns from the book thus far and have been very pleased with the results.

The book also includes a small, well-written reference section on needed sock techniques: picking up stitches, stretchy cast-ons, heel turns, and grafting the toe closed. It also includes a useful comparison list of common sock yarns and their gauges and characteristics.

A couple notes: all the patterns are designed for knitting from the top of the cuff to the toe. They could be adapted for toe-up knitting, but there's no discussion of that. Also, Nancy Bush writes each pattern in terms of working on double pointed needles. You could easily use 2 circs or Magic Loop if you desired, but you'd need to make your own pattern annotations.
