Studies in Jewish History and Culture #27: Shabbatai Donnolo's "Sefer Hakhmoni": Introduction, Critical Text, and Annotated English Translationby P. Mancuso
Synopses & Reviews
Sefer Hakhmoni by the 10th-century Jewish polymath Shabbatai Donnolo is one of the first texts written in Hebrew in medieval Europe and one of the most important documents of the a oeHebrew Renaissancea of Byzantine Jewry in southern Italy between the 9th and the 11th centuries. Written as a commentary on Sefer YeA(R)irah (Book of Formation, an anonymous text probably written in Palestine between the 3rd and the 6th centuries), Sefer Hakhmoni is in fact a much more complex work, consisting of biblical exegesis, astrology, medicine, a detailed analysis of the neo-Platonic idea of melothesia, and the correspondence between the elements of the microcosm and macrocosm. This volume offers the critical text, an annotated English translation, and a comprehensive introduction to Donnolo and his works.
Book News Annotation:
The tenth-century Calabrian Jewish physician and scholar, Donnolo, wrote one of the first Hebrew medical treatises known in medieval Italy. Mancuso (Jewish studies, Insubria University, Como) provides a much needed edition of Donnolo's Sefer Hakhmoni to which he has added a heavily annotated English translation. This is prefaced by a discussion of the history of Jews under Roman and Byzantine rule, Donnolo's life in the context of the time and the interaction between Jewish communities in Italy and Muslim lands. The work itself contains the medical exposition, an astrological treatise, a commentary on Genesis that has strong echoes of Neoplatonism and Merkabah mysticism and a biographical introductory poem containing an acrostic with Donnolo's name to prove authorship. This is a beautiful piece of scholarship that will be welcomed by historians of Byzantine Italy as well as those who study medieval Jewish writers.
