Spirited Away

Spirited Away Cover

Academy Awards, USA, 2003: Oscar - Best Animated Feature Film of the Year (Hayao Miyazaki)

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

From one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the history of animated cinema comes the most acclaimed film of 2002. Hayao Miyazaki's latest triumph, filled with astonishing animation and epic adventure, is a dazzling masterpiece for the ages. It's a "wonderfully welcoming work of art that's as funny and entertaining as it is brilliant, beautiful, and deep" (Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal). Spirited Away is a wondrous fantasy about a young girl, Chihiro, trapped in a strange new world of spirits. When her parents undergo a mysterious transformation, she must call upon the courage she never knew she had to free herself and return her family to the outside world. An unforgettable story brimming with creativity, Spirited Away will take you on a journey beyond your imagination. "To enter the world of Hayao Miyazaki is to experience a kind of lighthearted enchantment that is unique to the world of animation" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). It's a fantastic tale the whole family will want to experience over and over again.

Spirited Away is an excellent movie that deserved a Golden Globe in it's time. It makes you feel like your actually in the movie and following Chihiro's footsteps as she travels through the unkown spirit world in search of her lost parents. Most adults enjoy this movie very much, because it IS a classic. For any one that hasn't seen it, I suggest you go out and pick up a copy from where ever, or simply just buy it here, you'll fall in love with it and will never stop talking about it!

The dubbed version is crap. James Marsden is annoying and uber lame (probably why he got picked to play Scott Summers in the X-Men movies).

I highly recommend watching the Japanese language track. It's not that hard to read and watch at the same time. As with all of the Miyazaki films that Disney has "brought" to the USA, they altered not just the language in the English dub, but the soundtrack as well. You get completely different viewing experiences from the Japanese to the English Dub version because of it. Laputa (aka Castle in the Sky) is a classic example of the poor transfer to English.

Please watch this movie. It is great. Just please watch it the way it was created, not the way Disney hacked it.

Spirited Away is a very good transition from those who have experienced only English movies to Anime.

Spirited Away is about a little girl (Chihiro) who is spoiled. She is moving to another town with her parents and really dosen't want to go. On the way to their new house they take the wrong turn and end up in an abandoned amusment park. Or so it seems.

Chihiro transistions throughout the movie from spoiled brat to a very confident polite person, and finds out what kind of person she can be and how to move on into this new life of hers.

The artwork is amazing throughout the movie and dubbing is hardly noticable. (it's like the same if you watched bugs bunny) It's as comfortable to watch with small children and entertaining for the adults too.

I would highly recommend this to anyone. Especially those folks who aren't too satisified with the bloody, gory, nudity of today's films.
