Synopsis:

In November 1974, 23-year-old Ronnie DeFeo was convicted of murdering his entire family. Decades later, he was haunted by a terrifying demon from his past. But no one wanted to listen.

Except one woman.

For years, as the legend of the Amityville Horror murders were retold in print and film, DeFeo withdrew, growing more bitter as his twisted celebrity status increased.

Then he received a note from Brooklyn psychic Jackie Barrett, saying she had been made aware of his presence by an unknown force. She didn't know if he was guilty, innocent, or insane--but she sensed that he was besieged by a fearsome evil.

As Jackie began to talk to Ronnie DeFeo and discover the truth, she realized something startling: She hadn't been guided toward him merely to help him find salvation. There was someone else whose soul needed saving. Someone much closer.

Here, in her own words, Jackie Barrett reveals the details of her astonishing relationship with Ronnie DeFeo, and, for the first time, his revelation of what really happened in that terrible night.

This book is bad. Seriously bad. So bad that I returned it asked for my money back, which I have never done before with any book, ever. First, if you happened to catch Ms. Barrett's A&E Halloween special "Amityville: The Final Testament", then there is no reason to read this book which is basically a script of the show, with a little local flair thrown in here and there to add credibility. The Author claims 10,000+ hours of taped interviews were used in the writing of this book, but maybe thinks no one will do the math? That is over 416 twenty-four hour days, or possibly 8 hours a day for 3 and a half years, without missing a single day for holidays etc. I for one am not believing that for a second, knowing as I do exactly when Ms. Barrett "made contact" with Ronald Defeo, I believe she herself helpfully includes dates which prove that it would be physically impossible for her to have recorded 10,000+ hours of conversations before beginning work on this book (or the A&E special). So there is that exaggeration at the least.

But misremembered dates, or exaggerations of time are the least of the problems with this book. Even if one takes it as a mere story, rather than a "true account" which it clearly is not (she even contradicts herself a few times) then it remains poorly written, rambling, jumping from subject to subject with little regard to the flow of the story, and contains many paragraphs or even chapters devoted to details from the author's own life which have nothing to do with the topic of the book, or her supposed psychic abilities.

Finally, the meat of the story itself, The Amityville Murders. Whether one believes there was paranormal involvement in any way, the very basic facts of this case prove that this version of events simply could not have happened as stated, whether Ronnie DeFeo was controlled or influenced by spirits, abuse or any other excuse he would like to claim 37 years after the fact. Ms. Barrett frequently employs the CYA device of acknowledging that "Ronnie lies a lot" especially during his most fanatical flights of fantasy, yet she expects us, the readers, to believe his most recent version of (paranormal) events. He also has a version without the spiritual world involved that he gave to the parole board, so I guess we could pick and choose which version is truly "the truth" this year. If Ms. Barrett possessed even a fraction of the psychic ability she claims, she would have seen through this sort of deception just like every (non-psychic)person involved to date has.

I found this book utterly offensive in its presumption that the readers are gullible and uneducated enough to simply take the word of a late-comer to the Amityville saga making claims that are absolutely counter to the evidence and further desecrating the names and reputations of the deceased. That the author does so with no corroborating evidence or facts of her own, but merely her "feelings" and her "intuition" says to me that she doesn't care at all about the story she claims to tell, but instead is just another person trying to make a buck off the blood of a murdered family.
