Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A magnificent, vast, and enthralling saga, Sena Jeter Naslund's Ahab's Wife is a remarkable epic spanning a rich, eventful, and dramatic life. Inspired by a brief passage in Moby Dick, it is the story of Una, exiled as a child to live in a lighthouse, removed from the physical and emotional abuse of a religion-mad father. It is the romantic adventure of a young woman setting sail in a cabin boy's disguise to encounter darkness, wonder, and catastrophe; the story of a devoted wife who witnesses her husband's destruction by obsession and madness. Ultimately it is the powerful and moving story of a woman's triumph over tragedy and loss through her courage, creativity, and intelligence.

Synopsis:

"Captain Ahab was neither my first husband nor my last." An epic-scale, brilliant and compelling saga, inspired by a brief passage in "Moby Dick," chronicles the life of Captain Ahab's wife.

Engrossing story about the first 30 years of the woman who married Ahab [of Moby Dick fame]. Note, it is not necessary to have read Moby Dick to enjoy the sweep or narrative of this novel which weaves together first-person observations about/experiences with whaling, class differences, attitudes towards slavery, madness, and religious fervour, as well as serendipitous encounters with a few well-known people. I cared deeply about this woman's life and thought much about the novel even when I finished it.

It's been a long time since I've read a book written with such depth of feeling and experience of Life. Sena Jeter Naslund's use of words moved me, raised questions in me,and even sang to me at times as she took me to share in the lives of each character. While technically a novel, Ahab's Wife could pass at times for a book on zen koans or mystical experiences.

A great tale worthy of its inspiration and written with both power and subtlty. It has been several years since I've enjoyed a book as much as this.
