Publisher Comments:

“Scott Spencer writes about loves tenacity with passionate intensity….From his remarkable opening sentence he had me in thrall.”
—Newsweek

First published three decades ago, and hailed as “one of the best books of the year” by the New York Times, here is the classic novel that first established Scott Spencer as “the contemporary American master of the love story”(Publishers Weekly). With more than 2,000,000 copies sold worldwide and translated into more than 20 languages, Spencers Endless Love is a breathtaking story of teenage passion and obsession. The Washington Post called this unforgettable reading experience, “akin to the legendary thrill of riding a roller-coaster.” Endless Love is eternal—and as moving and satisfying as ever before.

Synopsis:

The classic novel that has been translated into over twenty languages and has sold more than two million copies worldwide

One of the most celebrated novels of its time, Endless Love remains perhaps the most powerful book ever written about young love. Riveting, compulsively readable, and ferociously sexual, Endless Love tells the story of David Axelrod and his overwhelming love for Jade Butterfield.

David and Jade are consumed with each other: their rapport, their desire, their sexuality, take them further than they understand. And when Jade's father banishes David from the home, he fantasizes the forgiveness his rescue of the family will bring, and he sets a "perfectly safe" fire to their house. What unfolds is a nightmare, a dark world in which David's love is a crime and a disease, a world of anonymous phone calls, crazy letters, and new fears—and the inevitable and punishing pursuit of the one thing that remains most real to him: his endless love for Jade and her family.

Published in 1979 and hailed as "one of the best books of the year" by the New York Times, Endless Love is the novel that first established Scott Spencer as "the contemporary American master of the love story" (Publishers Weekly).

Endless Love by Scott Spencer grips you like a vise. It seduces you into forsaking everything important -- sleep, family, work, friends -- until you’ve reached the final page.

It’s a very intense read.

Here’s the synopsis:

David Axelrod and Jade Butterfield, both seventeen, are high school sweethearts in the throes of first love and first sexual experiences. Jade’s liberal parents welcome David, the only child of unhappy parents, into their family. The lack of boundaries enables an ever-deepening co-dependency between David and Jade.

Before long, Jade’s parents realize they need to intercede, so the father expels David from the Butterfield household for an undetermined amount of time.

[This next part is NOT a spoiler. It happens early in the novel and is mentioned in the back cover summary.]

David wants desperately to return to his life with the Butterfields. One day, while walking past their home, he has the delusional impulse to light a “containable” fire on their front porch. His plan was to then knock on the family’s door to rescue them. His heroism would win back their acceptance. But the plan “overfires” and things get pretty out of control fast.

Years go by. Some dark times, even insane times. And David, that poor kid, he can’t let go of Jade. Or won’t:

"I loved her and knew, as well, that I would never fall back from that love, never try, never want to."

Author Scott Spencer gives us a look at the dysfunctions in both David and Jade’s families as the novel progresses. The story of an endless love unfolds:

"Love -- or is it only romance? -- is a psychedelic. It’s the flying carpet, the rope trick. It is that singular, and no one who sees it -- which means, of course, believing it -- can ever hope to be the same…love is a state of altered consciousness."

As it turns out, everybody’s mad for love:

"If endless love was a dream, then it was a dream we all shared, even more that we all shared the dream of never dying or traveling through time, and if anything set me apart it was not my impulses but my stubbornness, my willingness to take the dream past what had been agreed upon as the reasonable limits, to declare that this dream was not a feverish trick of the mind but was an actuality at least as real as that other, thinner more unhappy illusion we call normal life."

This is riveting writing. But it’s also depressing, so don’t read it while you’re sad in real life. Then, when you’re good in the hood again, dig in and take this intense ride.

One more thing: this is my idea of a good romance.
