Publisher Comments:

He had always wanted to be a warrior. The Rangers, with their dark cloaks and shadowy ways, made him nervous. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now fifteen year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. What he doesn't realize yet is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And as Will is about to learn, there is a large battle brewing. The exiled Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom. This time, he will not be denied.

About the Author

John Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia, hoping to be a writer. It wasn't until he wrote a highly uncomplimentary poem about a senior executive at the agency where he worked, however, that his talent was revealed. It turned out one of the company directors agreed with John’s assessment of the executive, and happily agreed to train John in copywriting. After writing advertising copy for the next two decades, John teamed with an old friend to develop a television sitcom, Hey Dad!, which went on to air for eight years. John began writing Ranger's Apprentice for his son, Michael, ten years ago, and is still hard at work on the series. He currently lives in a suburb of Manly, Australia, with his wife. In addition to their son, they have two grown daughters and four grandsons.

Ranger's Apprentice #01: The Ruins of Gorlan

This book is an amazing book if you’re looking for something to drag you into the pages and feel like you’re actually there. The adventure you’ll experience while reading this book is like no other. Along with all of the other books that the author John Flanagan has published. The time and detail he spent putting into this book really shows itself within the first few pages that you dedicate to this series. If you like fictional series that carry on for multiple books that seem like they’re never ending then this is the series for you. The adventure never stops!
Some of the things that I personally like about this book and series is that the story is based on a kid about my age, 14, who starts off without knowing who his real parents are. The only thing he knows is from what he’s heard from other people talking about his father and about him. "His name is Will, his father died a hero, please take care of him." His ultimate goal in life is to be just like his father, but when the disappointing news comes that he isn’t able to be a knight, he sets his eyes on another opportunity that comes to him that will change his life forever. From then on, he will become just as notorious as his father had become and if you read the rest of the series, all the spontaneous adventures will come to you as well.

Lieder Madchen, April 26, 2011 (view all comments by Lieder Madchen)
This book is too much fun for words. My sister picked it up as her prize for the library summer reading program last year, and when she finished it I read it, then my 27 year-old brother. As we went through the series, my other little sister joined in and there were some times when we were literally sneaking into each other's rooms to steal away the most recent one in the series. (I am very excited about the new one coming out soon.)
The world this series is set in has certain parallels to our own, countries that obviously correlate to Scandinavia, France and others. The characters, plot, and writing style are great, with light-hearted dialogue interspersed with more serious and sometimes dark events and worries. I would recommend this book and the books following it to anyone.

My 9 yr old son has read all 9 in the series and is anxiously awaiting the 10th. I have read them as well and I'm waiting right along with him. These are books that have adventure, danger, humor, friendship and fun. Frankly they make you want to be a ranger! Superb writing and cast of characters this is a series well worth reading, no matter your age.
