Matt and his sisters live in fear of their mother. Once you meet her in the pages of this book, you will too. The only comfort in this gut-wrenching thriller is that you know, from page one, that Matt will survive. What you don't know is how he'll manage to do it. With lots of action, this psychologically gripping novel is Werlin at her best.

Publisher Comments:

For Matt and his sisters, life with their cruel, vicious mother is a day-to-day struggle for survival. But then Matt witnesses Murdoch coming to a child?s rescue in a convenience store, and for the first time, he feels a glimmer of hope. When, amazingly, Murdoch begins dating Matt?s mother, life is suddenly almost good. But the relief lasts only a short time. When Murdoch inevitably breaks up with their mother, Matt knows he needs to take action. But can he call upon his hero? Or will he have to take measures into his own hands? A heart-wrenching portrait of a family in crisis, this is Nancy Werlin?s most compulsively readable novel yet.

Oi... This was not a pleasant book. But it was very good. It is written in first person and takes the form of a letter that the narrator is writing for his youngest sister so that she can later understand the level of abuse they all suffered at the hands of their mother. Werlin described the incidents as they really would have been seen and interpreted by a boy of 13-14.

Anyone who has been through childhood abuse will identify with Matthew and the walking on eggshells and constant gauging the mood of the abuser. They will understand his hope for a hero, and his fear of his hope. Readers will feel his frustration at the way adults don't really listen or take seriously the abuse until it's almost too late. Hopefully they'll understand why so many abused and neglected kids, particularly those with siblings to look after, don't tell anyone.... and don't just leave.

I absolutely loved this book. I could not put it down, I read it in two days. The book centers around a teenage boy, and his two younger sisters. The book is mainly about how they got through living with their abusive mother. You feel for them, you feel like one of the children. You get introduced to a few other characters. They help add to the story and show what they all have to go through. The novel is written as a journal to the youngest sister from Matt. The purpose was so Matt could explain to her everything that had happened, and why things are the way they are.
