Publisher Comments:

Eddie's father, two uncles, and best friend are all dead, and it's a struggle for him not to end up the same way. Violence makes Fresno wallow in tears, as if a huge onion were buried beneath the city. Making an effort to walk a straight line despite constant temptations and frustrations, Eddie searches for answers--and discovers that his closest friends may actually be his worst enemies.

Buried Onions is a very compelling story. The main character Eddie is faced with very tough life circumstances. It would be easy to write a book about how he "puts his nose to the grindstone" and all turns out well. That is not reality folks, and Soto does a great job of portraying how life really is in the barrio. Yes, the story is bitter, but wouldn't you be bitter too if you couldn't catch a break?
I think that everyone should give this book a read. It tells you a tale of a person who is extremely reaslistic and who is a person many of us will never get to meet personally. Listen to the story that Soto has to tell you. Learn from Eddie and, if nothing else, gain a new appreciation for all that you have in your life.

This book was just depressing. It just sucks the life out of you. The main character does nothing but mope about their life. This book is completely pesimistic and at no point tries to make things better. It was just painful to read.
