Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Three American children, while visiting relatives in Scotland, come upon exactly what their mother has always said they lack: patience. Only this Patience is an old card game--one that summons sinister magic from the past: an ancient map that when altered, alters the world. And worse still, the children call forth the maps owner--the wickedest of Scotlands dark wizards, the bloody-minded Michael Scot. Can the children foil Michael Scot before he gets hold of his map and rewrites the world in his own image?

Review:

"Yolen's engaging fantasy is reminiscent of Susan Cooper's The Boggart in tone and style, though this is written for a slightly younger audience. The action never flags, making this a sure bet for fantasy and adventure fans." Kay Weisman, Booklist

Review:

"The setting and characters are described cursorily, and loose ends abound....However, the action moves swiftly and young readers may well be too busy following the story to care." School Library Journal

Review:

"Yolen has once again given us a fine new series of fantasy stories....I found these stories to be a quick and enjoyable read." Stacey Conrad, KLIATT

Review:

"Once again, this master storyteller weaves humour, intelligence, and life lessons into a beautifully crafted yarn....The Wizard's Map explores loyalty, love, and courage." Regina Lynn Preciado, SF Site

Review:

"Yolen gathers all the ingredients for a compelling middle grade fantasy novel....Though some readers may find light entertainment here, most will be left wanting a more believable, substantive story than this tale delivers." Publishers Weekly

Synopsis:

Three children discover a map that leads them into magical adventure in this first book of Jane Yolen's thrilling Tartan Magic series

Synopsis:

Welcome to Scotland, where magic runs through the land like the stripes in the colorful Scottish tartans. Everyone and everything here, it seems, has some wizardry--old folks at rest homes, dusty old card games, even cowardly dogs. The only ones without magic are American twins Jennifer and Peter, and they're the ones who need it most.
