Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Gavin Guile is dying.

He'd thought he had five years left — now he has less than one. With fifty thousand refugees, a bastard son, and an ex-fiance who may have learned his darkest secret, Gavin has problems on every side. All magic in the world is running wild and threatens to destroy the Seven Satrapies. Worst of all, the old gods are being reborn, and their army of color wights is unstoppable. The only salvation may be the brother whose freedom and life Gavin stole sixteen years ago.

Review:

"Weeks manages to ring new tunes on...old bells, letting a deep background slowly reveal its secrets and presenting his characters in a realistically flawed and human way." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"Weeks has written an epic fantasy unlike any of its contemporaries. It is a truly visionary and original work, and has set the bar high for others in its subgenre." Graspingforthewind.com

About the Author

Brent Weeks was born and raised in Montana. After getting his paper keys from Hillsdale College, Brent had brief stints walking the earth like Caine from Kung Fu, tending bar, and corrupting the youth. (Not at the same time.) He started writing on bar napkins, then on lesson plans, then full time. Eventually, someone paid him for it. Brent lives in Oregon with his wife, Kristi. He doesn't own cats or wear a ponytail. Marianne Grant, January 8, 2013 (view all comments by Marianne Grant)
Brent Weeks surpasses himself from "The Black Prism" in creating a dynamic world of magic and adventure. What I like most of this book, is the way Weeks' characters constantly build and evolve. They don't follow their fantasy archetypes but instead are allowed to grow as individuals. Weeks' ups the action in his second novel of the series as Kip discovers more truths and even more dangerous secrets in "The Blinding Knife".
