ONCE IN NINE LIVES, SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY HAPPENS.

The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. Then Gwen’s veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who’d been abandoned. It was love at first sight.

Everyone warned that Homer would always be an “underachiever.” But the kitten nobody believed in quickly grew into a three-pound dynamo with a giant heart who eagerly made friends with every human who crossed his path. Homer scaled seven-foot bookcases with ease, survived being trapped alone for days after 9/11 in an apartment near the World Trade Center, and even saved Gwen’s life when he chased off an intruder who broke into their home in the middle of the night. But it was Homer’s unswerving loyalty, his infinite capacity for love, and his joy in the face of all obstacles that transformed Gwen’s life. And by the time she met the man she would marry, she realized that Homer had taught her the most valuable lesson of all: Love isn’t something you see with your eyes.

Synopsis:

"Homer's Odyssey" is the once-in-a-lifetime story of an extraordinary cat and his human companion, a celebration of the refusal to accept limits--on love, ability, or hope against overwhelming odds.

This book was fantastic! The story flowed really well and the writer was so descriptive, it felt like you were living with her and Homer. This book is great for people of all ages and who love animals.

Homer’s Odyssey is a heartwarming tale (or tail) of an eyeless black cat, named Homer. At the young age of 2 weeks, an “incurable” disease affected this abandoned kitten’s life, forever. His eyes had to be removed and he was to live the “humdrum” life of a sightless cat. Humdrum? No. This cat can run, jump, climb, and find his way around an entire house all by himself. His crazy antics will have you, literally, falling over with laughter. “I wiggled a few fingers in the water. ‘Are you thirsty, kitty?’ At the light splashing sound my fingers made in the water, Homer raised his head […] buried one miniscule paw in the bowl of dry food and [flung] it into the water. The sound it made as it hit the water was nearly identical to the sound my fingers had made.” One of the best books I have ever read, it has a delightful theme: friendship. “I am Homer’s eyes. And he is my heart.”

I was prepared for another so-so cat book which was mostly about the author and not the cat. Boy, was I surprised! While this book explores the author's life's ups and downs, the focus of the book is about the wonderful cat Homer and what he teached the author (and all of us) about dealing with challenges and living up to your potential. I was truly inspired and loved every page. In fact, I bought two more copies to give to friends. If you're looking for an uplifting, inspirational story, then get this book!
