Hell on earth.

That’s what it’s like for Luce to be apart from her fallen angel boyfriend, Daniel.

It took them an eternity to find one another, but now he has told her he must go away. Just long enough to hunt down the Outcasts—immortals who want to kill Luce. Daniel hides Luce at Shoreline, a school on the rocky California coast with unusually gifted students: Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans.

At Shoreline, Luce learns what the Shadows are, and how she can use them as windows to her previous lives. Yet the more Luce learns, the more she suspects that Daniel hasn’t told her everything. He’s hiding something—something dangerous.

What if Daniel’s version of the past isn’t actually true? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?

The second novel in the addictive FALLEN series . . . where love never dies.

Review:

"In Kate's sequel to Fallen, fallen angel Daniel has negotiated an 18-day truce with demonic Cam, during which time they will keep his one true love, 17-year-old Luce, safe from the Outcasts, 'spineless, waffling angels, shunned by both Heaven and Hell,' who are after her. Daniel sends Luce to Shoreline, a Northern California prep school for angel-descended Nephilim. The change is stressful for her because she is there alone and because she is seen as a 'legendary freak' by some students for her famous doomed relationship with Daniel, which has unfolded tragically over several lifetimes. Uncovering details from her past lives and meeting charmingly normal Miles, Luce begins to have doubts about Daniel. Equal parts romance and thriller, this sequel can be both schmaltzy ('There was no darkness, no more cold, just the lovely sensation of being bathed in his violet glow. Even the rush of the ocean was canceled out by a soft hum, the energy Daniel carried in his body') and frequently suspenseful. The open-ended finale paves the way for a third book. Ages 12 — up. (Sept.)" Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) (Copyright PWyxz LLC)

In “Torment” by Lauren Kate, Luce is sent to the prestigious California school Shoreline by Daniel in order to keep her safe from the Outcasts " immortals who are not a part of Heaven or Hell and who are hunting Luce down to kill her. At Shoreline, Luce joins the unique Nephilim students who are the children of fallen angels and humans. There she makes friends with others who posses unusual talents. It is there that Luce meets Miles, the normal, friendly, gorgeous, down to earth boy who makes Luce second guess everything. It is here where Luce learns more about the shadows that have always haunted her and how they can help her glimpse her past lives. It is also here where Luce questions her relationship with Daniel and his honesty to her, or the lack thereof. Everything that Luce believed in is being challenged and her world is changing rapidly.

I think that Lauren Kate writes with intensity that draws the readers into the story so deeply that they become part of the story themselves. “Torment” is another well written, entrancing continuation to the Fallen novels. Lauren Kate has ventured into territory unlike no other and has thus captivated her audience.

This book is recommended for YA followers. However, you’ll also find romance entwined with jealousy and paranormal fiction.

Personally, I didn’t think I was interested in this series after reading the synopsis, but my cousin raved about them so much, that I took a chance. I’m glad that I did, because these have climbed their way to the top of my favorites list.

As I mentioned in my earlier review of “Fallen”, I feel that Lauren Kate is a force to be reckoned with. I think that she found a niche that yearned to be discovered and she did it well. It is clear that her career as a promising writer is only in the beginning stages and that we will be hearing much, much more from her in the future. I’m looking forward to reading “Passion” and seeing what will become of Luce and Daniel and their star crossed love for one another. Fallen angels are the new objects of affection!

Lately I’ve been really impressed with the teen books that have come across my shelf. Hush, Hush and Crescendo, Nomansland, Rampant, and of course Fallen. Torment is the second in the Fallen series and just as good a the first.

I was thinking about what really drew me into this book, and the others I’ve listed. You can only say “it was really good” and “the characters were great” so many times before those phrases lose meaning. And I think I’ve figured out what makes these books good to me: the main female characters are strong. They aren’t Bella Swan, so sure that she’d found the love of her life and nothing can get in the way of that. Nora, Astrid, and Luce are all in love and yet that love does not dictate the entire course of their story. They are not passive bystanders, watching the men in their lives fight the battles. They are curious and headstrong and not all together sure that being in love, even if you think it’s true love, is the best thing in the whole world.

What I loved about Torment is that Luce spends a good deal of the book questioning her relationship with Daniel, the fallen angel who’s been in love with her for forever. Because it’s definitely not a normal, or very healthy, relationship. He keeps all kinds of secrets from her, treats her like a child on occasion, and expects her to trust him implicitly. But unlike Bella, Luce is smart enough to know when Daniel is keeping things from her and stubborn enough to go looking for the answers herself when he doesn’t offer them. She doubts their relationship and the future they might have together. Sure she’s got a beautiful amazing supernatural boyfriend, but she also wonders about what her life would be like if everything was just normal again.

And—I really love this in characters—Luce gets mad at Daniel when he hides things from her or is acting particularly childish. Bella never gets mad at Edward and it’s the one thing that drives me completely up the wall about her character. What girl, what heroine, would really just let some guy walk all over her and then throw herself back in his arms when he’s ready to come home? Blech. It’s so passive, and damn frustrating. I want my characters to assert themselves, to fight back, to show some spirit that I can latch on to for the ride. Because what’s the point of reading an epic romance, if there’s no adventure? I don’t want a damsel in distress. I want the damsel that goes out swinging and then comes back for more.

So hats off to Lauren Kate, Becca Fitzpatrick, Diana Peterfreund, and all the other teen authors out there who are giving life to these kick-ass heroines. And also for writing damn good stories.
