Murder on the Half Shelf (Booktown Mysteries)by Lorna Barrett
Synopses & Reviews
Its a recipe for disaster when bookbinder Brooklyn Wainwright is asked to restore an antique cookbook .
Brooklyn has always been a little obsessed with food, but it was her sister Savannah who became a chef, graduating from the prestigious Cordon Bleu school in Paris. She and her classmates all went on to successful careers, but none of them achieved culinary superstardom like Savannahs ex-boyfriend Baxter Cromwell.
When Baxter invites the old gang to participate in his new restaurants gala opening in San Francisco, Savannah looks forward to seeing her friends, and even asks Brooklyn to restore a tattered cookbook—an old gift from Baxter—as a present for him. But Brooklyn immediately recognizes that the book, which has strange notes and symbols scrawled in the margins, is at least two hundred years old. She thinks that it probably belongs in a museum, but Savannah insists on returning it to Baxter.
Shortly after receiving the gift, Baxter is found dead, with Savannah kneeling over him, bloody knife in hand, and the rare cookbook has disappeared. Brooklyn knows her sister didnt kill him, and she suspects the missing cookbook might lead to the real villain. Now Brooklyn will have to turn up the heat on the investigation before Chef Savannah finds herself slinging hash in a prison cafeteria.
"At the outset of Agatha-finalist Barrett's unsatisfying sixth Booktown mystery (after 2011's Sentenced to Death), Tricia Miles, owner of the Haven't Got a Clue bookstore in Stoneham, N.H., who's been invited by her sister, cookbook author Angelica, to share in a free night at the new Sheer Comfort Inn, stumbles across the body of Pippa Comfort, one-half of the couple running the inn. Tricia soon becomes aware that Jon Comfort, Pippa's husband, is not what he seems, and begins receiving disquieting packages from someone apparently well versed about her own past. Police chief Grant Baker, Tricia's boyfriend, is inclined to think that Tricia isn't an innocent bystander to the crime, while Bob Kelly, Angelica's former boyfriend, may be involved in shady dealings. Situations that strain credulity and a culprit who appears without sufficient foreshadowing will disappoint some readers, but series fans should enjoy the colorful smalltown characters and the cliffhanger ending. New York Times bestselling author Lorna Barrett presents another page-turning chapter in her Booktown Mystery series. This time mystery bookshop owner Tricia Miles is about to find out murder is no walk in the park
While out walking Sarge, her sisters bichon frise, Tricia is led by the agitated dog to a man lying in a gazebo. Shes startled when she recognizes Pete Renquist, the president of the Stoneham Historical Society, who appears to be suffering from cardiac arrest. When Pete later dies in the hospital, the discovery of a suspicious bruise and a puncture mark on his arm suggests he may have been murdered.
Haunted by Petes enigmatic last words to her, Tricia begins to consider who had a motive to kill her friend. Did Pete take his flirting too far, only to have a jealous husband teach him a lesson? Or did he discover something in the towns historical records that his killer wanted kept secret? Tricia is determined to get to the bottom of things before someone else becomes history

The town of Stoneham is a haven for bookstores, but it is sadly lacking in bed-and-breakfasts. Fortunately Pippa and Jon Comfortand#8217;s Sheer Comfort Inn is about to open, and the couple has offered some locals a free night as a trial run.
But it wonand#8217;t be so easy to sleep after Tricia makes two startling discoveries: Pippaand#8217;s murdered body in the backyard, and the fact that Pippaand#8217;s husband, Jon, is actually Harry Tyler, a man Tricia lovedand#151;and believed deadand#151;for nearly twenty years.
Though Harry is the prime suspect, Tricia doesnand#8217;t believe him capable of murder, even though heand#8217;s led a life of lies. Especially when she discovers that Pippa had a few secrets of her ownand#151;some that may have been worth killing for.
