Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Baltimore woman disappears during family vacation, declares the headline. Forty-year-old Delia Grinstead is last seen strolling down the Delaware shore, wearing nothing more than a bathing suit and carrying a beach tote with five hundred dollars tucked inside. To her husband and three almost-grown children, she has vanished without trace or reason. But for Delia, who feels like a tiny gnat buzzing around her family's edges, "walking away from it all" is not a premeditated act, but an impulse that will lead her into a new, exciting, and unimagined life...

Review:

"Tyler details Delia's adventure with great skill....As so often in her earlier fiction...[she] creates distinct characters caught in poignantly funny situations....Tyler writes with a clarity that makes the commonplace seem fresh and the pathetic touching." The New York Times

Review:

"Utterly compelling.....Wonderfully satisfying....Ladder of Years is virtually flawless." Chicago Tribune

Review:

"A 'page-turner' in the best sense....Both madcap and genteel, Anne Tyler knows as well as anyone that 'human beings lead many lives.' Casually, delightfully, Ladder of Years will tell you just how we humans manage this trick." The Baltimore Sun

Review:

"[A] charming, often hilarious, and astute novel. Tyler is in top form here. Her seemingly effortless prose is, like silk, rich in subtle hues and sheeny with dancing light." Donna Seaman, Booklist

Synopsis:

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Breathing Lessons relates the story of Delia Grinstead, a restless mother of three children, who leaves her family for a life of excitement.

This book put into words what I want to do from time to time..My kids are grown and live on their own, it is just husband and me..
If I just up and left my home like this main character did, I would lose what I have worked for all of my adult life..My husband would be relentless and greedy..
So I just take small trips..I get
A break from everyday life
A breath of space
A breath of air
The beauty of nature before my eyes!
The strength to keep myself together until the next getaway...
