Caro is amazing -- the very best of historical research, and as fascinating to read as any novel. The early passages (he picks up the story at the point of JFK's assassination) are particularly striking. Not just a portrait pf LBJ but of an entire era.

Normally a fiction reader, I like to read an occasional biography. Robert Caro has set the bar very high in his overly exhaustive biographies of Lyndon Johnson. To me the amazing thing is how he keeps me reading about events I have some knowledge of while making it as exciting as a Michael Connelly thriller. I fear future biographers will hesitate before taking on a subject knowing they have to live up to Caro's standards.

This series is the best and most readable story of a puzzling figure and American Government and history. What I particularly enjoyed, is the wide view this and the subsequent books offer. In this book, we get a political and environmental view of the area in which the story is set. We get a view of how LBJ's character was formed and the paradox of the man who was among the most influential American's of the 20th century. The leader who brought a new era in Civil Rights, Medicare, and anti-poverty programs also initiated the most divisive war in history. He passed the most liberal legislation of the century while ending up reviled and forced from office for his illiberal foreign policy. Caron's writing is fine and his research is amazing. I have never read a biography of this depth.
