Sisters Grimm #03: The Problem Childby Michael Buckley
Synopses & Reviews
A third installment in this much-talked-about new series of mysteries set in a modern-day fairy-tale community.
The sisters Grimm, intrepid detectives of fairy-tale crime, come face to face with their parents' kidnappers, the mysterious organization of Everafters who call themselves The Scarlet Hand. One of them turns out to be the world's most famous fairy-tale character and the other an unstoppable killing-machine known as the Jabberwocky. Without Mr. Canis (aka The Big Bad Wolf) fighting at their side, the girls have little hope that they'll be reunited with their mother and father. That is until their long-lost Uncle Jake returns home with stories of a weapon, now destroyed, that can kill the Jabberwocky. The girls must find the pieces so the deadly blade can be reforged, and in the process butt heads with some of the most powerful Everafters in Ferryport Landing. Will the sisters Grimm save the day?
"Book three in the Sisters Grimm series, The Problem Child by Michael Buckley, continues the adventures of 11-year-old Sabrina and seven-year-old Daphne, first introduced in The Fairy-Tale Detectives (PW praised the book's 'good-natured inanity and eccentric personalities'), descendents of Jacob and Wilhelm. Here they set out to solve the most important mystery of their lives: what happened to their parents more than a year ago? The search for answers leads them to the most famous fairy-tale character of all." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)
"The majority of fairy tale cameos are interesting and Buckley gets points for using the Hans Christian Anderson 'Little Mermaid' story rather than the Disney....Ferguson's black-and-white illustrations beautifully accent this entertaining story." Children's Literature
After the shocking ending of The Everafter War, this book, the penultimate one in the series, picks up with Sabrina, Daphne, and Puck stuck in the Book of Everafter, where all the fairy tales are stored and enchanted characters can change their destinies. The girls (and Puck) must chase the Master through a series of stories, where they're willing to change what they must in order to save their baby brother. Soon, however, they are confronted by the Editorthe book's guardianwho, along with an army of tiny monsters known as Revisers, threatens the children with dire consequences if they don't stick to the stories. As they chase their quarry and dodge the Revisers, they meet Alice, Mowgli, Jack the Giant Killer, Hansel and Gretel, the Headless Horseman, and others. But will they find their brother in time?
A mystery story with a monstrous twist
In book three of the series, Sabrina and Daphne Grimm tackle their most important mystery: Who kidnapped their parents more than a year ago? Sabrina enters the hideout of the Scarlet Hand, the sinister group of Everafters who are keeping her parents prisoner. She has a chance to rescue her mom and dad but is foiled by the most famous fairy-tale character in the world. With the help of her little sister (who might be tougher than Sabrina realizes) and a long-lost relative, Sabrina finds a powerful weapon for fighting her enemies, and discovers that magic has a high price.
