Trained at the Novosibirsk Institute of Mathematics in the Russian tradition of probability and statistics that goes back to Kolmogorov and Markov, Novak (Middlesex U., London) specializes in extreme value theory. The theory deals with rare events--what many textbooks call outliers and recommend throwing away--and the probabilistic part of it describes the limiting distribution of sample extremes and number of exceedances of high thresholds. Here he presents methods for estimating extreme quantiles, tail probabilities, and measuring market risk in the buying and selling of money. He concentrates on the univariate extreme value theory for dependent random variables, the area where the main progress seems to have been achieved during the past two decades.
