Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Chester is more than a picture book. It is a story told, and retold, by dueling author-illustrators. M?lanie Watt starts out with the story of a mouse in a house. Then M?lanie's cat, Chester, sends the mouse packing and proceeds to cover the pages with rewrites from his red marker, and the gloves are off. M?lanie and her mouse won't take Chester's antics lying down. And Chester is obviously a creative powerhouse with confidence to spare. Where will this war of the picture-book makers lead? Is it a one-way ticket to Chesterville, or will M?lanie get her mouse production off the ground?

Synopsis:

This story is told--and retold--by dueling author-illustrators, but who will win out? Will it be Watt or Chester, her cat with confidence to spare? Full color.

Synopsis:

Old Man Fookwire is a grump. The only thing he likes to do is paint pictures of the birds that visit his backyard. The problem is, they fly south every winter, leaving him sad and lonely. So he decides to get them to stay by putting up beautiful birdfeeders filled with seeds and berries. Unfortunately, the squirrels like the treats, too, and make a daring raid on the feeders. The conflict escalatesuntil the birds depart (as usual), and the squirrels come up with a plan that completely charms the old grump.

“Bald Fookwire is a riot. . . and the squirrels, with their bloated bellies and contented smiles, are a flying hoot in this droll debut.”Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“A symphony of regret, respect, and sweetness. Readers will want to linger over this book and treasure every page.”School Library Journal

Aunt Stina, April 11, 2012 (view all comments by Aunt Stina)
Chester is the cat most of us know if we've ever "owned" a cat! He has attitude, everything is about HIM, and he is going to do things HIS way! While author Melanie Watts writes her story, Chester scribbles his red "editing" on top to write his version of things. The battle of wills and writing is humorous and fun for preschool-aged and older children. Toddlers may not understand why Chester can write in Melanie's book, and they cannot. However, this cat is a favorite, and there are other picture books about Chester that followed this introductory book.
