When I was a first grade teacher, the children loved reading Pierre (as did I). And Chicken Soup with Rice was another favorite. Now that I read as a volunteer with the SMART program (Start Making a Reader Today), I have discovered the other two jewels in this collection. Alligators All Around is a very clever alphabet book, and I found One Was Johnny as entertaining as the kids did. I am going to buy this set for my grandson, even though we already own Pierre. Maurice Sendak, we miss you.

One of the best things Sendak wrote besides "Where the Wild Things Are". I had these as a child and they are now a favorite with my son. Plus all children love a small special book, let alone four! One is about the alphabet, one a counting book, one about seasons, and one about Pierre who would only say "I don't care". If you are interested in these, an excellent accompaniment would be the Really Rosie CD which includes the words of these books set to music by Carole King. A real treasure.
