Publisher Comments:

Do you want to write stories that catch your readers and never let go? Have you ever wondered how to create a book as magical as Ella Enchanted, as touching as Dave at Night, as captivating as Fairest?

Well, now you can find out! In Writing Magic, Newbery Honor author Gail Carson Levine shares her secrets of great writing. She shows how you, too, can get terrific ideas for stories, invent great beginnings and endings, write sparkling dialogue, develop memorable characters—and much, much more. She advises you about what to do when you feel stuck—and how to use helpful criticism. Best of all, she offers writing exercises that will set your imagination on fire.

With humor, honesty, and wisdom, Gail Carson Levine shows you that you, too, can make magic with your writing.

About the Author

Gail Carson Levine is the author of the Newbery Honor Book Ella Enchanted; New York Times bestsellers Ever and Fairest; ALA Notable Book Dave At Night; The Wish; The Two Princesses of Bamarre; the six Princess Tales books; the nonfiction book Writing Magic: Creating Stories That Fly; and a companion to this picture book, Betsy Who Cried Wolf!

She lives with her husband, David, and their Airedale, Baxter, in the Hudson Valley of New York State, in a farmhouse that was built more than two hundred years ago.

As a new creative writing teacher for Young Adults, I find this book useful in many ways.
For one, the writing of Ms. Levine is clear, concise and has a young sense of humor.
Secondly, I admire the straight-forwardness the author uses especially when discussing writers' groups, how to handle rejection from publishers and how to take in and use criticism from fellow writers. Not only does the author touch on all aspects of writing fiction (finding ideas, adding details, making characters come to life, pacing the story, setting the scene, etc.) she also shares the importance of showing AND telling, finding your unique voice and the power of rewrites.
All around excellent writing book for young writers (and more experienced writers, as well.) Oh, and I didn't even mention the writing exercises at the end of each chapter.
