Publisher Comments:

Where does style start? For two decades, legions of style-makers and trend-watchers have answered that question by turning to the pages of Paper magazine. Now, coinciding with Paper's twentieth anniversary celebration, comes this stunning portrayal of the last twenty years, a wonderful commemorative of the life and times of the era. 20 Years of Style charts how style has evolved, adapted, and incorporated underground cultures from the worlds of art, music, film, sports, and urban street life, ultimately passing them into mainstream fashion. Laid out by year starting in 1984 and continuing through the present, this star-studded journey cannot be described by words alone.

Adding to this visual feast are essays and commentary from Paper magazine founders and co-editors Kim Hastreiter and David Hershkovits, as well as celebratory tributes to Paper magazine from deejay/musicologist Moby; rap icon Fab 5 Freddy; artist/designer Todd Oldham; and style historian Harold Koda.

Moreover, the book features observations on different aspects of style from various celebrities--a virtual who's who of popular culture! — including:

  • Hip-Hop + Style according to writer/director Charlie Ahearn; Drag + Style according to drag icon RuPaul
  • Skate + Style according to author/gallery founder Aaron Rose
  • Skate + Style according to Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon
  • Art + Style according to gallery owner Jeffrey Deitch
  • Music + Style according to fashion designer Anna Sui
  • Entertainment + Style according to fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi
  • Film + Style according to filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar
  • Celebrity + Style according to actress/performer Sandra Bernhard; Daylife + Style according to filmmaker John Waters
  • Nightlife + Style according to photographer Patrick McMullan.
As an understatement, the past twenty years of popular culture have been an incredible journey. Through the finest photography and insights only Paper magazine could make, this exquisite book is the one source you'll want to turn to again and again — not only to relive the heady fashions of the past twenty years, but also to forsee where popular culture will travel in the future.

Where does style start? It starts right here.

Book News Annotation:

Taken from the pages of Paper magazine, this "style bible" (as The New York Times dubbed it) offers a style chronology from 1984-2004, a sampling of its columns, and color and b&w photographs of avant garde clothed and unclothed styles year-by- year. Columnists offer insightful riffs on such subjects as the culture wars, subcultures including hip-hop, drag, and skateboarding, and film and style according to director Pedro Almódovar.

This book is lavishly illustrated, and contains great articles by Pedro Almodóvar, Kim Gordon, John Waters, RuPaul and others, the focus being on the photographs though.
