Publisher Comments:

Despite the increased focus on self-esteem over the past three decades, depression in children has continued to grow, now affecting a quarter of all kids today. To combat this trend, Dr. Seligman began the Penn Depression Prevention Project, the first long term study aimed at 8 to 12 year olds. His findings were revolutionary, proving that children can be against depression by being taught how to challenge their pessimistic thoughts.

The Optimistic Childoffers parents and teachers the tools developed in this study to teach children of all ages life skills that transform helplessness into mastery and bolster self-esteem. Learning the skills of optimism not only reduces the risk of depression but boosts school performance, improves physical health, and provides children with the self-reliance they need as they approach the teenage years and beyond. world of optimists is a bigger world, a world of more possibilities, says Seligman. Filled with practical advice and written in clear, helpful language, this book is an invaluable resource for caregivers who want to open up this world for their children.

Book News Annotation:

A new edition of the index supplying both teachers and students with guides to finding models, resources, and directions for science experiments and demonstrations. Ranging from elementary to advanced level, the 30,000 alphabetical topic listings keyed to 1,500 commonly held titles are original and irresistibly interesting, e.g. how to invent a package so a raw egg can be dropped from a tall building without breaking, or how to make disappearing ink. The volume covers subjects in biology, aerodynamics, ecology, nutrition, electricity, and everything in between--a very useful resource at a very good price.

Seeing the harried existence my two young children live and knowing the effect it has on adults makes me wonder if our childhoods could have had an impact on how we are today. Can't wait to pick this book up and find some ways to help them cope.
