Publisher Comments:

Based on the author's extraordinary personal collection of presidential election memorabilia, Campaigning for President tells the colorful story of how presidents (and their losing rivals) have wooed voters since America was founded. These objects—from posters and paper dresses to ice-cream bars, sunglasses, and (of course) buttons—form a fascinating, moving, sometimes funny, sometimes outrageous physical record of the past. Campaigning for President makes it clear that money didn't become important just in recent elections and that candidates—and their minions—have sometimes been willing to gloss over the fine points or get very creative in their self-representation in attempts to win the presidency. Full of entertaining stories about the elections and the memorabilia, this book provides wonderful insight into America's most important achievement—our democratic system.

Book News Annotation:

Wright, a lawyer and magazine publisher, began collecting American memorabilia at the age of ten. He is now working to create a permanent Museum of Democracy to house his collection in New York City. This color illustrated book, worthy of any history buff or political junkie's coffee table, showcases his collection of presidential election memorabilia. These objects--posters, ice cream bars, sunglasses, and, of course, buttons--form a physical record of the past. The text accompanying the high-quality photos makes it clear that money didn't just become important in recent elections, and that candidates have often been willing to gloss over the fine points. Full of entertaining stories about the elections and the memorabilia, the book provides insight into the democratic system. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

With a Presidential political campaign on the horizon, the publishing of this book is very timely. As an avid political button collector, I was enthused to see such a comprehensive compendium of political memorabilia being published. The fact that this book comes from one person's private collection is virtually beyond belief; truly a life's work. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Presidential politics as within the memorabilia, there is much campaign history to be learned.
