Summer break . . . and the livin' ain't easy!

Just because the students at New York College have flown the coop doesn't mean assistant residence hall director Heather Wells can relax. Fischer Hall is busier than ever, filled with squealing thirteen- and fourteen-year-old girls attending the first ever Tania Trace Teen Rock Camp, hosted by pop sensation Tania Trace herself—who just happens to be newly married to Heather's ex-boyfriend, heartthrob Jordan Cartwright. But the real headache begins when the producer of a reality TV show starring Tania winds up dead . . . and it's clear that the star was the intended victim.

Grant Cartwright, head of Cartwright Records, wants to keep his daughter-in-law (and his highest-earning performer) alive. So he hires his oldest son, black sheep of the family and private investigator Cooper Cartwright—who just happens to be Heather's new fiancé. Heather should leave the detecting to Cooper. But with a dorm full of hysterical mini-divas-in-training, she can't help but get involved. And after Tania shares a really shocking secret with her, this reality suddenly becomes more dangerously real than anyone ever anticipated.

Review:

"Cabot (Big Boned) returns to her Heather Wells series with this fourth mystery. When Tania Trace, the new wife of Heather's ex, Jordan, becomes involved in a murder during the first annual 'Tania Trace Rock Camp,' New York College dorm Fischer Hall earns the nickname that fans of the series know all too well: 'Death Dorm.' Quickly, assistant resident director Heather is involved in the case, along with her gorgeous new fiancé, Cooper Cartwright, a PI who is hired to protect Tania. But when Tania reveals a troubling secret to Heather, Heather, an amateur sleuth, and Cooper must work to find the killer before someone else dies. Sadly, book four in the series lacks not only the surprise villain of previous installments, but also Heather's trademark tenacity in finding the killer (she doesn't do much sleuthing here). What remains, though, is the cute and amusing wit that Cabot instills in all her female protagonists. Readers of Cabot's blog will recognize Heather, with her hilarious pop culture references and dry humor. A good read, though fans might find the plot disappointing in the context of the big picture. Synopsis:

After dallying with sexy vampires and ingeniously reinterpreting the Dracula legend (Insatiable, Overbite), #1 New York Times bestseller Meg Cabot is ready to rock n roll once more with Heather Wells. The un-petite assistant New York City college dorm director and sometime sleuth is back in Size 12 and Ready to Rock—a delectable comedy mystery that proves once more that the much beloved author of The Princess Diaries rules in the realm of grown-up womens fiction as well. Heathers got her hands full when a pop star and her reality TV camera crew invade the dorm—bringing with them a summer camp-full of adoring teen admirers—only to have an inconvenient homicide spoil the fun.  Theres romance, treachery, merry mayhem and music—just the ticket for readers who like to rock out on the hip contemporary singleton fiction of Sophie Kinsella, Jennifer Weiner, and Jane Green.

I really like the Heather Wells books. I like the tone that Meg Cabot write in and usually they are pretty funny. This book really wasn't for me though. I really like Heather, Cooper and her dorm friends, but I had a hard time caring about Tania Trace and Jordon, who are the main focus of this story. It's too bad! If she wrote another Heather Wells book, though, I would read it. I did like the bit at the end where Cooper and Heather discuss their engagement and having children or not having them; it left the book on a happy note, which is what I like when I read Meg Cabot books.
