Publisher Comments:

Caught up in grief after the death of her sister, Nina Sankovitch decided to stop running and start reading. For once in her life she would put all other obligations on hold and devote herself to reading a book a day: one year of magical reading in which she found joy, healing, and wisdom.

With grace and deep insight, Sankovitch weaves together poignant family memories with the unforgettable lives of the characters she reads about. She finds a lesson in each book, ultimately realizing the ability of a good story to console, inspire, and open our lives to new places and experiences. A moving story of recovery, Tolstoy and the Purple Chair is also a resonant reminder of the all-encompassing power and delight of reading.

Synopsis:

“NinaSankovitch has crafted a dazzling memoir that remindsus of the most primal function of literature-to heal, to nurture and to connectus to our truest selves." —Thrity Umrigar, author of The Space Between Us

Catalyzedby the loss of her sister, a mother of four spends one year savoring a greatbook every day, from Thomas Pynchon to Nora Ephron and beyond. In the tradition ofGretchen Rubins The Happiness Project and Joan DideonsA Year of Magical Thinking, Nina Sankovitchssoul-baring and literary-minded memoir is a chronicle of loss, hope, and redemption. Nina ultimately turns to reading as therapy andthrough her journey illuminates the power of books to help us reclaim ourlives.

I enjoyed every word of this fantastic book and I highly recommend it to anyone, particularly those who love to read. Nina is a gifted writer and the way she deftly interweaves books with her personal history is a pleasure to watch; it's a beautiful tribute to life, family, and most of all, Anne-Marie. Upon reaching the end I now have many other books to read and deep admiration both for her accomplishment (A book a day for a year!) and her as a person.

From one reader to another, I thank you.

The author takes us through her year of reading a different book every day. It is a recounting of her feelings about the books, but it is much more than that. She psychoanalizes herself especially relations with her family. The most important "coming to terms" is with her sister. You get not only an introduction to all the books but also an understanding of yourself. My relations with my brother were made clear. A wonderful book
