Publisher Comments:

Prue McKeel's life is ordinary. That is, until her brother is abducted by a murder of crows and taken to the Impassable Wilderness, a dense, tangled forest on the edge of Portland. No one's ever gone in—or at least returned to tell of it.

So begins an adventure that will take Prue and her friend Curtis deep into the Impassable Wilderness. There they uncover a secret world in the midst of violent upheaval—a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions. And what begins as a rescue mission becomes something much greater as the two friends find themselves entwined in a struggle for the very freedom of this wilderness. A wilderness the locals call Wildwood.

About the Author

Colin Meloy once wrote Ray Bradbury a letter, informing him that he "considered himself an author too." He was ten. Since then, Colin has gone on to be the singer and songwriter for the band the Decemberists, where he channels all of his weird ideas into weird songs. With the Wildwood Chronicles, he is now channeling those ideas into novels.

As a kid, Carson Ellis loved exploring the woods, drawing, and nursing wounded animals back to health. As an adult, little has changed—except she is now the acclaimed illustrator of several books for children, including Lemony Snicket's The Composer is Dead, Dillweed's Revenge by Florence Parry Heide, and The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart.

Colin and Carson live with their son, Hank, in Portland, Oregon, quite near the Impassable Wilderness.

This book is the best book I have ever read, including My Father's Dragon, which is saying something. I couldn't stop reading this fantasy like non fiction book. I live in Portland, and so much of this is true, but with the animals talking makes it such a fun and funny and happy and sad really, good BOOK. I would recommend it to any age, no matter if they are 92 or 14, 44 or a toddler, as a bedtime story. It reminds me of so many different things, and everyone who reads it can connect in so many ways! Have fun reading the best book ever!

I was lucky to get an ARC of this book. I loved it. First of all, it's very well written. At the very beginning, when the little brother is abducted by the crows, I was a little weary, as it started off feeling like a Lemony Snicket wanna-be. Luckily the book hit its stride early and didn't falter the rest of the way. The basic concept of Wildwood, that there is a fantasy world in the real-life woods just outside of Portland, Oregon, is what made me want to read the book in the first place. Meloy does a really good job of transitioning between real world St. John's and fantasy-world Wildwood. The book is very atmospheric, and does a good job of making you feel like you are in those woods. Prue and Curtis are great main characters, The Dowager Governess is a fun villain. And the book is dark. Characters get shot or injured, and some die. The Governess's backstory is very dark, and the story of Prue's parents is very real and sad. Oh and the illustrations are nice and help with the atmosphere. I would recommend this to anyone 4th or 5th grade and older.
