This fictionalized autobiography of Daisy Goodwill Flett, captured in Daisy's vivacious yet reflective voice, has been winning over readers since its publication in 1995, when it won the Pulitzer Prize. After a youth marked by sudden death and loss, Daisy escapes into conventionality as a middle-class wife and mother. The events of Daisy's life, however, are less compelling than her rich, vividly described inner life — from her memories of her adoptive mother to her awareness of impending death. About the Author

Carol Shields (1935-2003) is the author of The Stone Diaries, which won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and Canada's Governor General's Award. Her other novels and short-story collections include The Republic of Love, Happenstance, Swann, The Orange Fish, Various Miracles, The Box Garden, and Small Ceremonies.

This is another book I found hard to put down. The characters really come alive off the pages.

This is a powerful story. It really sucks you in and when you finally finish, you're breathless - in a good way.

This is a beautifully written, thoughtfully constructed tale that effortlessly brings the reader through the late 1800s and into the 1970s. It's epic in terms of the time but entirely personal in terms of the characters' development. The characters are quirky and believable. I found the women interesting archetypes/stand-ins for people of their generations. I picked up the novel because I'm determined to read more winners of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. (The Stone Diaries won in 1995.) Now, I'm determined to read more books by Carol Shields! She wrote a biography of Jane Austen, so that's going right onto my list.
