About the Author

Mario Vargas Llosa is the author of twelve novels, including Death in the Andes, In Praise of the Stepmother, The Storyteller, Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter, and The War of the End of the World, which are all available from Penguin in English. In 1995, he was awarded the Cervantes Prize, the Spanish-speaking world's most distinguished literary honor, and the Jerusalem Prize. Vargas Llosa lives in London.

This book describes the birth of the Brazilian Republic through the lives of individuals who shaped it or exploited it or sought to destroy it. It is brutal and haunting and the intricacies of each life are written with such great imagination. I read this book at the beginning of 2012 and still find myself imagining the scenes of insurrection and war.

From Quixotic beginning to heartrending end, this epic tale is filled with humor, delight, dismay, insight, and unforgettable strong characters. Based on the historical circumstances surrounding Anthony the Counselor who established Canudos near Belo Monte, Brazil in the 19th century, a mecca for the wretched and the damned. Lovingly told with compassion and understanding, a story you will not want to end.
