Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Winner of the 1977 Newbery Medal, this is a remarkably moving novel — one that has impressed the hearts and minds of millions of readers. Set in Mississippi at the height of the Depression, it is the story of one family's struggle to maintain their integrity, pride, and independence in the face of racism and social injustice. And, too, it is Cassie's story — Cassie Logan, an independent girl who discovers over the course of an important year why having land of their own is so crucial to the Logan family, even as she learns to draw strength from her own sense of dignity and self-respect.

Synopsis:

"The vivid story of a black family whose warm ties to each other and their land give them strength to defy rural Southern racism during the Depression. . . . Entirely through its own internal development, the novel shows the rich inner rewards of black pride, love, and independence despite the certainty of outer defeat." —Booklist (starred review)

this is a great book! totally enthralling, it won't let you put it down. Just as you think "just one more sentence" you come across a whole new plot that you never expected, and again you can't put it down.

This is a wonderful book that allows you to read about something which is constantly occuring, yet we are not so aware of it. It teaches you to look at something in another way, which I believe is the greatest lesson of all.
