I loved this book when I was a teenager, back in the late 1970's, and I still love it today. As an urban educator, I use it with my groups of "I hate to read" teenage boys - and they all love it, too. First and foremost, the story itself is interesting and fast moving. The characters are extraordinarily well developed, particularly given that the book was written by a 16 year old, and the theme (people are people, no matter how rich or poor) is one that everyone - rich or poor - would do well to give some thought to. I can't recommend this book highly enough, both for teenagers and for those adults who still enjoy YA fiction.
