Gennifer Choldenko is the award-winning author of Al Capone Does My Shirts. Before that book, she wrote this equally fabulous story. Ever feel like a stranger in your own family, like you couldn't possibly be related to them? Ever find people (or animals) who seem to understand you and love you so much better than your own family? Antonia (aka Ant) sure knows what this is like, and she ends up lying — a lot — to get through the days. Read this book to find out how a zoo figures prominently in the story, with lions and giraffes and, yes, a death-defying experience (or two). Recommended by Karen, Powells.com

The above commenter is obviously not astute enough to be in touch with reality. Probably Home schooled with no social skills...nuff said...

This is a darling story about a bright young girl who has trouble fitting into the typical mold. There are several very funny parts and yes, it does tug at the heart strings, but I certainly wouldn't call it depressing. Thought provoking maybe. I like that it isn't saccharine sweet as so many children's books are. Ant comes across a real girl facing the kind of challenges children might actually face at her age.

If your mom ignores you and you have to lie to get attention, then I guess you would like this book.... whatever... bleh. Unremarkable despite the title. Pretty depressing, go sit in a corner and read this book. Hate sounding like a cynic, and wish I had better words, but I've read a lot of books. I guess I'm pretty hard to impress.
