This book is so full of context. It reminds me of Taylor Branch's America in the King Years Series. Marable's Malcolm is immediately more recognizable in that he is more human, touchable. All we've ever known about Malcolm is what we read in his autobiography. That is to say all that he and Alex Haley wanted to us to know.
Marable's book can seem a bit tabloid-ish, particularly when he repeats unsubstantiated rumors concerning Malcolm's sexuality. Altogether, though, a masterfully painted picture of a great American,

A fascinating and very readable history of both Malcolm X and the time in which he lived.

A challenging but passionate book about a challenging and passionate subject! I know that this biography of Malcolm X has some reviews focused on it being a bit too overarching in some of its claims and sometimes I agree, but I also felt it was a great exploration of the life of one of the more complicated historical figures of our recent times. Marable mixes admiration and critical analysis of Malcolm's views and the writing is very well researched at times. In many ways I felt as if this work was more representative of the true meaning and power of Malcolm's life than the Haley co-written Autobiography or at the very least is a wonderful (albeit challenging) complement to the Malcolm X and Haley work.
