Publisher Comments:

There are red sheep and blue sheep, wind sheep and wave sheep, scared sheep and brave sheep, but where is the green sheep?

The search is on in this cozy, sheep-filled story from acclaimed author Mem Fox and popular Australian cartoonist Judy Horacek. Complete with sleepy rhymes and bright illustrations, this book is sure to delight children of all ages, from the very young to those just beginning to read.

Review:

"The hunt is on for a sheep that's green all over. But before its undisclosed location is revealed, Fox and first-time picture book illustrator Horacek (previously teamed with Fox for the resource book Reading Magic, for example) will find this book a useful vehicle for putting her suggestions into practice. Ages 6 mos.-5 yrs. (Apr.)" Publishers Weekly (Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information, Inc.)

We first got this book out of the local library; we renewed it many times as it's a hit; adorable illustrations and the ever-present simple, yet poignant words of Mem Fox. On a personal note, my son could "read" this book at 3 years old. He now wants to own his own copy, so now at 4 he can read it to his little sister!

Jennifer Starkman, July 7, 2007 (view all comments by Jennifer Starkman)
At first glance, Mem Fox?s "Where is the Green Sheep?" seems deceptively simple, little different from every other baby book about that storybook farmyard staple, the woolly sheep. The pictures are bright and cheery, the sentences spare and straightforward, as one would expect in a book for toddlers.
But there is also something enchantingly irreverent about the text here. It is in the references to ?bath sheep? and ?bed sheep,? for example--both ideas common to baby books, but presented here in a slightly offbeat context.
"Where is the Green Sheep?" is a lovely, fun book, simple enough for the youngest children but a little different from the usual farmyard fare--as much for your sake as for the child?s.
