This a special book written compellingly from an autobiographical perspective about the scars of a hard childhood but also the love this person has to give. It made me cry pretty intensely without giving away about what and, for that reason, I consider it a keeper and standing out of all the books I read in 2010.

This is a very good effort for a social worker to write about her own history authentically. It made me cry, actually weep and I found it meaningful. It was the best book for me of 2010 because so much emotion came up for me. Lots to think about in this little book. Great job.

This is a simply and beautifully written book, with great meaning for horse lovers, but also for anyone with sympathy for life itself. Ms. Richards conveys the meaning that one, very singular horse, had in her life, which translates to anyone who has had to cope with loss, whether from an early age or a later one.
This is a book that deals with loss, but in its heart, it is a book about hope, and love, and the possibility to reconcile a damaged life with quiet dignity.

"Synopsis"
by Libri,
A lonely woman who's had a difficult life agrees to take care of a skeletal racehorse rescued by the SPCA. Susan Richards already owns three horses, but it is with Lay Me Down that she forges a special, healing relationship that alters her life.
"Synopsis"
by Firebrand,
The horse Susan Richards chose for rescue wouldnt be corralled into her waiting trailer. Instead Lay Me Down, a former racehorse with a foal close on her heels, walked right up that ramp and into Susans life. This gentle creature—malnourished, plagued by pneumonia and an eye infection—had endured a rough road, but somehow her heart was still open and generous. It seemed fated that she would come into Susans paddock and teach her how to embrace the joys of life despite the dangers of living.
An elegant and often heartbreaking tale filled with animal characters as complicated and lively as their human counterparts, this is an inspiring story of courage and hope and the ways in which all love—even an animals—has the power to heal.
