Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This unique series of books is specially designed to meet the needs of the busy ESL classroom teacher, experienced and inexperienced alike. The authors of each volume in the series are noted authorities in their field and have had years of teaching and teacher-training experience. The second edition of "Techniques and Principles in Language Teaching includes a modest updating of all of the methods presented in the first edition with the exception of Chapter 6, which has undergone a substantial revision to reflect the evolution of Suggestopedia (first edition) to Desuggestopedia in this edition. In addition, the Introduction has been expanded and methods that have come into prominence since the first edition of this book have been included. As in the first edition, the author draws the reader into classrooms where various teaching methods and approaches are being used. Readers are encouraged to reflect on their own beliefs and to develop their own approach to language teaching. The book provides practical, step-by-step guidance for new teachers, while introducing more experienced teachers to new approaches and teaching ideas.

Synopsis:

This volume of essays by distinguished British and North American scholars examines British responses to the French Revolution and the ways in which the idea of the Revolution was mediated into British culture. The manner in which the culture of one country appropriates the culture of another

is complex and is a process which develops over time. After the initial political impact of the French Revolution, facts and events were transformed and reinterpreted within British culture. For the modern intellectual historian, what is significant is the variety of ways in which British culture

represented the French Revolution and assigned meanings to it. The Revolution exercised its greatest influence on politics and political thought, but it is equally possible to trace its presence in such diverse areas as economic and social history, historiography and sociology, literature, and

political philosophy--topics which are all represented in this volume.
