this book combines the arabian myths with the realities of history. a multi-layered festival of color linking the rich arab past with the cruel realities of today. a love story, a comedy, and a tragedy. a hakawati is a storyteller, a keeper of the history, of the traditions of lebanon. the narrator's grandfather was a hakawati and the narrator inherited his gift of storytelling. a powerful book written by an author who, i hope, will continue to write, experiment, and risk failure.

Best book of the decade. Lovely writing, intriguing stories and a beautiful look at some folklore I barely knew existed.
