How about viewing a controversy through several pairs of glasses and odd happenings. Never mind how you feel about protecting the United States border; you will be left more bemused by it than feeling victimized after reading this book. More over you are given more that one underdog that will pull on your heartstrings: The obvious Aspergers young man to a retired college professor. They all pull on their puddly boots on foot at a time.

I like how the author stated in an interview that more than one boarder exists in this book as in real life. Please come explore the obvious and subtle boarders with Jim Lynch.

Humorous and witty, the story is centered around Brandon Vanderpoole, large and dyslexic, who becomes a border patrol agent. It shows how he affects those around him in the community in which he lives, the border towns of Washington state and British Columbia, Canada. The character of Brandon is finely crafted and Lynch's descriptions of the birds and natural areas of northern Washington are amazing.

Quirky, sad, funny, and uplifting all at the same time. Just as he did in The Highest Tide, Jim Lynch weaves in beautiful descriptions of nature and the beauty around us as he creates a story of human relationships and all that comes with them. At times the despair in some characters' lives is hard to read because it is so real. The view of the world through Brandon Vanderkool's eyes is enlightening to say the least. I am glad he triumphs in the end and I believe most readers will feel the same.

Product details 304 pages Vintage Books USA - English 9780307456267 Reviews:
"Synopsis" by , From the acclaimed author of "The Highest Tide" comes a story that is at oncecomic, tender, and momentous--a riveting portrait of a distinctive community, an inventive love story, and fiction of the highest order.
"Synopsis" by , Set in the previously sleepy hinterlands straddling Washington state and British Columbia, Border Songs is the story of Brandon Vanderkool, six foot eight, frequently tongue-tied, severely dyslexic, and romantically inept. Passionate about bird-watching, Brandon has a hard time mustering enthusiasm for his new job as a Border Patrol agent guarding thirty miles of largely invisible boundary. But to everyone’s surprise, he excels at catching illegals, and as drug runners, politicians, surveillance cameras, and a potential sweetheart flock to this scrap of land, Brandon is suddenly at the center of something much bigger than himself.

A magnificent novel of birding, smuggling, farming and extraordinary love, Border Songs welcomes us to a changing community populated with some of the most memorable characters in recent fiction.
