An excellent batch of short stories from a talented writer, Wells Tower. Tower has a real knack for description. Each of these stories was a world itself, which is, I suppose, the point of a short story. The real challenge is to make the reader care about these characters in just a few pages. Sometimes he merely sets the scene and the story ends, leaving the rest to your imagination. Many of these characters seem slightly damaged, marginal and vulnerable. I'll look forward to reading some of his other work.

I loved these short stories. Usually I avoid short stories because they always leave me wishing there was more. Tower's stories never left me hanging while still feeling complete. I never felt like I was short-changed or duped. He has a fantastic way with words that left me ready for an all new story each and every time.

I cannot recommend this collection highly enough. Tower has such a way with words that you end up loving characters you should be hating. That's talent! These stories are lovely, colorful, dark, and memorable. There are moments in them I will remember forever. Hoping that Tower writes a full-length novel soon, because I am eager to see what he will do with a higher word count.

Wells Towers characters live in a world that I am only somewhat familiar with, but I'd welcome being there, if only for a short time. The stories are wild, wonderful and truly original.

"Staff Pick" by ,

The long-awaited debut collection by Wells Tower does not disappoint. Full of masterful tales, brilliant humor, and soul-shattering pathos, Tower's work should place him at the forefront of American storytellers.

"Staff Pick" by ,

Every story here feels like a weird little shot of brilliance. I can only describe this collection as "masterful." I had read the title story a few years before and really loved it, but I actually liked most of the other stories even more. "Retreat" has a great ending that'll make your stomach tumble with laughter and sickness. "Wild America" is full of young female bitterness. And "On the Show" is full of some of the most quotable dialogue ever.

"Review A Day" by , "The phrase 'well-crafted' suggests an unfortunate analogy between a piece of fiction and a piece of furniture. And there is a surprising amount of fiction around that is reasonably accomplished and graceful, or strikingly ornamented, or that skillfully reproduces previous successes in structure or tone and yet feels synthetic and inert — made up, in short, rather than like something that has been transcribed from a revelatory vision." (read the entire New York review of Books)
"Review" by , "We need books like Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned...What [Towers] portraits lack in grandeur, they compensate for in their accuracy...[The characters] live the way we Americans do."
"Review" by , "These are lurid, ingenious, beautiful, delicate, and very funny stories. Full of pity and terror, they are also great fun to read. Wells Tower has written a brilliant book."
"Review" by , "Wells Towers' stories are written, thrillingly, in authentic American vernacularviolent, funny, bleak, and beautiful. You need to read them, now." Michael Chabon, author of The Yiddish Policemens Union and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay
"Review" by , "This arresting debut collection of stories decisively establishes Mr. Tower as a writer of uncommon talent."
